SATCHEL PAIGE: Dont’ Look Back

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Satchel Paige could throw a baseball like no one else. But when he began his career in the 1920s, even the best African American players were kept out of the major leagues. Paige rose to stardom in the Negro Baseball Leagues–and waited for his chance to play in the “big show.” Finally, at an age when most players retire, Paige proved that staying in the game pays off. The Jonas Sister- Chapter 29 Back!

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Chapter 29 Back! (Chapter from Katie’s point of view) Ding! Dong! The doorbell just rang. Quick, I grab my schoolbag and look at myself one last time in the mirror. My hair is crazy this morning. First day back to school since I left on tour with my brothers and THIS is what I get. Grrr. Life is definitely unfair! – Good morning William and Melanie! Mom says from downstairs – Hello Mrs. Jonas! Mel says – Katie should be ready soon…Mom starts KATIE! Come down your friends are here! Mom screams from downstairs – Coming! I answer Mom goes back in the living room to help Frankie get ready to take the bus. As I come down the stairs, I hear Mel and Will whispering. – Calm down! It has only been a week! Will says – I know! But I missed her soooo much. It hasn’t been the same with only you! Mel replies – Hey! Will protests – Ah! You know what I mean, idiot! Mel says, exasperated – Whatever, Will says I arrive in the entrance. – Guys, quit it with the fighting! I say – KATIE! Mel screams before jumping on me. We give each other a big hug. – Hey! What about me? Will asks with a puppy face I give him a hug. – I’m soooo happy you’re FINALLY here! Don’t ever leave for that long again! Mel says with authority. – Okay, okay! I laugh – You should’ve seen her, she was depressed and BARELY talked. That’s a big accomplishment for you Mel. Bravo! Will says – Shut up! He missed you two even if he’s trying to hide it! Mel replies – Well, I missed both of you! Now come on or we are going to

Matalan School Uniforms – Back to School Checklist

Published by admin under Uncategorized

When it comes to kitting out new school uniforms there are two different trains of thought; parents are primarily concerned with buying affordable and hard-wearing clothes, whereas kids want to be trendy and stylish. Until recently it was difficult to find school uniform that fulfilled both parents’ and pupils’ expectations but thankfully, not anymore.

Forget being forced to dig deep into your finances to buy the mountain of accessories and footwear, for your child’s return to school as that is a thing of the past. Superb quality girls’ and boys’ school uniforms are now available in all the latest styles from major supermarkets and leading clothes retailers such as Matalan – voted number 1 for school uniforms by mums who read The Sun newspaper.

Indeed, most of today’s staple school uniform items such as t-shirts, polo shirts, trousers and skirts are available from high street outlets at extremely affordable prices. Unfortunately, it’s not all good news as mandatory school logo uniform items still have to be bought from the school’s appointed school wear shop at a significantly higher cost.

But, for day-to-day items choice has never been so great when it comes to school uniform; girls have a great choice of trousers for chillier weather or comfort, and on-trend skirts for spring and summer. Instead of a skirt and top combination, younger girls can opt for practical hard-wearing pinafores.

The boys don’t get left out either when it comes to high street uniforms, there is a fantastic choice of latest style crew neck jumpers, polo shirts, sweatshirts and trousers; plus the choice of footwear for both sexes is huge.

Little ones need to be wrapped up in coats that are weather-proof and warm when the weather turns nasty, and Wellington boots also come in very handy for those rainy days.

In addition to clothing don’t forget to kit out their schoolbag with all the necessary equipment and stationery items including pens and pencils. Another essential accessory is a back-pack in which the kids carry their school books, lunch boxes and drinks containers as well as the essential school books!

Remember to order name tags well in advance, and buy a permanent ink pen for marking items such as coats. Sewing the name tags are always tricky, so like everything else to do with going back to school don’t leave it too late.

To help with your back to school planning here is a suggested checklist of the most needed items and likely quantities required of each. It’s not a definitive list as children of different ages will require different things, but it is a good starting point. In addition to this list you will also need to find out from the school whether mandatory items such as blazers, school ties and sports shirts are required.

Back to school checklist:

• Pair of shoes

• Pair of Wellington boots

• Bag for school books / equipment

• Bag for PE kit

• Warm and preferably waterproof coat

• Sweaters, sweatshirts or cardigans

• Shirts or blouses

• Polo tops

• Shorts, skirts or trousers

• Pairs of socks or tights

• Pairs of sports socks

• Pair of plimsolls

• Pair of trainers

• Pair football/ rugby boots

• T-shirts

• Tracksuit

• Relevant sports equipment such as shin pads, tennis racquet, hockey stick etc.

• Lunch box and drinks container

• Stationery set including: paper, pens, pencils, rubber, maths set and calculator

It’s a long list but unless your child is starting school you won’t necessarily need to buy all the items listed. Instead examine your child’s current uniform for signs of excessive wear and ask them to try everything on for size before deciding what you need to buy.

Although it’s never too early to start preparations for the new school term don’t be overly keen to get everything too far in advance. Aim to get the balance right, as you won’t want to spend money on clothes that no longer fit when the term starts. But on the other hand, leave it too late and you’ll find the shelves are cleared of the most popular sizes.

Matalan is one of the UK’s leading retailers of quality clothing products. At Matalan you’ll find a wide variety of products for the whole family, ranging from women’s clothing to school uniforms and accessories. Visit:http://www.matalan.co.uk/pages/backtoschool

Back Pain Alert – the Increasing Problem of Poor Workplace Posture

Published by admin under Uncategorized

People who regularly ‘surf the net’ probably know all about the minor aches and pains that can arise when using computers for long hours. These back, shoulder and neck pains often seem insignificant to the user. Others subconsciously link the cause to other areas of their life such as an overindulgent exercise session, their workload or even their age, using a ‘quick fix’ pain relief as a solution! Age does not stimulate back pain, repetitively positioning your body in an incorrect position will. Poor posture is the cause, shoulder, neck and lower and upper back pain are the symptons. I’ve noticed that most people set about easing the sympton whilst ignoring the deep rooted cause.

Most of us know that those minor chronic aches and pains can, if ignored, sometimes develop into much more serious issues that can cause a lot of pain and potentially threaten our ability to work. OK, so this isn’t a dramatic risk like working on a fishing boat, down a coal-mine or in the army, but it can still be career-threatening and life-changing.

These problems are only likely to get more common. Computer use is has grown dramatically over the past decade and continues to grow, both in and out of the workplace.

I like to point out the following – when I was growing up, extensive computer use (including gaming) was only for computer geeks, like myself. But with the advent of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and CompetitiveUrge, even cool kids are using computers for very long periods at a time, and from much earlier ages than ever before. In fact, I visited a number nurseries the other day on a mission to find the most suitable for my baby son. I was amazed to find the amount of computers present, and the age of the children using them. I’m not talking about kids preparing for school life, boys and girls as young as 3 navigating PC’s with considerable aplomb!

As impressive as such feats appear,  this also has worrying implications – studies of schoolchildren in Scotland and Scandinavian countries in recent years have shown that they start suffering musculoskeletal pain from an early age. Much of this is correctly concluded as down to carrying heavy schoolbags and poor school furniture, but they’ve also shown clear correlation between the amount of time spent using computers and experiencing pain symptoms.

The 2007 ViewSonic survey of 1500 computer workers reported 71% of respondents suffered back pain at their computer. But when they looked at the figures for 16-24 year olds, that jumped to 80%.

Either these young peoples’ problems will settle down in time – or the fact they’ve been using computers from a young age, together with other social trends such as obesity, mean that posture-related problems are going to significantly increase over time.

I know which my money’s on…

My background is very sport, health and fitness orinetated, not in my profession but in my lifestyle. I have been a keen sports player since school. My current interests include the ‘complete ergonomic solution’ PostureMinder, http://www.postureminder.co.uk , and the sport based social networking site – http://www.competitiveurge.com/

Different Types Of Lower Back Pain

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Lower back pain is one of the most common neurological ailments. There can be several causes for it but mainly, it occurs as a part of the ageing process. You may also suffer from this kind of backache because of a sedentary life style. When you consult a doctor about your backache, you will have to tell him/her in detail about your problem. Therefore, it is very important for you to be aware of the various aspects associated with this type of pain.

Working Conditions

Your working conditions play a very important role in this regard. For example, if you are working for long hours while sitting in a chair and if the chair is not ergonomically perfect, it may lead to certain back problems. However, in most of such cases, the pain does not stay longer than a week or so. However, when the pain is left unchecked or untreated, it may lead to some serious condition, which might take a longer time to resolve.

Acute Cases

If the pain goes away within a few weeks, it is termed as acute lower back pain. It is mostly mechanical in nature, which can be caused because of certain disorders, such as arthritis, or because of a trauma, such as sports injuries or stress on the spine. Though, it is very uncommon in pre-teen children, but still, heavy schoolbags are very much likely to strain their back. The symptoms may range from an inability (or difficulty) to stand straight, limited range of motion, limited flexibility, stabbing or shooting pain. Acute pain syndrome should never be left untreated, as doing so may make the problem more severe. Besides that, it is also very important for you to understand that sometimes, you may feel pain in your lower back, not because your lower back is hurt but because of a problem elsewhere in the body. Therefore, you must explain everything clearly to your doctor so that he/she can diagnose the root cause of the problem.

Chronic Cases

In order to decide whether the lower back pain is acute or chronic, the duration of the pain is measured. For example, if the pain persists for longer than two months, it will be considered as a chronic case. This usually happens when you do not treat the backache at the right time. In such cases, it is very difficult to diagnose the actual root cause of the pain.

Possible Causes

The possible causes for this kind of pain may include the aging process, injury and trauma, bone lesions, muscle problems, nerve irritation, scar tissue, congenital abnormalities in the spine, irritation to joints and discs, viral infections, osteoporosis or other bone diseases, and osteoarthritis. There are several other factors as well that may lead to this problem. These factors may include wrong sleeping position, poor physical condition or posture, stress, smoking, and obesity or weight gain.

Sometimes, the lower back pain can be a very serious problem, especially if the person is also suffering from progressive weakness, pain when coughing, loss of bowel or bladder control, or fever. An understanding of lower back pain management is necessary to get proper relief.

Back to school? Get your kid’s school supplies and be cool!

Published by admin under Uncategorized

The truth is that not every kid is excited to go to school. That’s because school means waking up early, doing homework, finishing exams and accomplishing projects. But school is both meaningful and exciting too, because every kid is bound to make new friends and experience learning. But that’s not the only motivation though – because kids are also excited about their new clothes, shoes, pencils, notebooks and the whole gamut of things they will be needing (or they say they will be needing) in school. Now don’t let this be confusing for you – there are things kids want and things that kids need so just make sure that you have all the basics when it comes to back to school supplies for kids.

Here are some of the most common school supplies kids really need when going back to school:

Bag – Every kid wants a new schoolbag and no parent would insist on letting his/her child use last year’s schoolbag if a new bag is affordable anyway. Consider what your kid  wants for his or her bag. Some bags have certain characters printed on them like Spiderman or the cast of High School Musical. Let your kid choose, but don’t get something that’s too big for them to carry. Try to estimate whether you’re his notebooks   and other school materials would fit in the bag, because when it comes to bag, size and  design are both important. Notebooks – Now notebooks are certainly necessary. They come in different sizes, designs and different line formats (all blue or black lines, or the alternate blue and red lines). Make sure that you get one that’s appropriate for your child’s grade level. Again, give your child the freedom to choose a certain cover. Check out the kind of paper used in the notebooks too, get ones that are thick enough and have high quality. Notebooks that are too cheap tend to be the kind that get easily torn or broken when erasures are  made. Writing materials – This includes pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners as well as art materials like crayons. They come in different designs as well so let your child choose whatever design he or she wants. Just remember that pencils come in different kinds – some are used for writing while others are used for drawing and stenciling. Some write more clearly than others, and they’re really made that way, so pay attention if a certain number is indicated on the pencil because that probably means something.

So a bag, some notebooks and writing materials are the basic back to school supplies for kids. You might also need to buy some pad paper, glue and a pair of scissors. It might also be a good idea to get your kid a lunch or snack box of his or her choice. Now other art materials like watercolor or paint and bond paper are more likely to be announced by your child’s art teacher during the first week of class so you don’t really need to buy them right away. The basics are the most important however, so don’t let your child go to school without these things.
